Chilean peso loses against dollar for third consecutive day

The Chilean peso dropped or the third consecutive day against the dollar as the latter gained more value abroad, copper prices fell, and stocks remaind firm in their growth.

The peso ended half a percentage point lower at 596.00/596.50 per dollar as compared to yesterday's 593.00/594.50. It is now 7.55 percent stronger against the dollar after depreciating 22.3 percent in 2008.

Foreign Holding of a Chile Pension Fund Fell

Private pension funds in Chile has about $21.2 billion investment overseas in December which have already plummeted to 38 percent from a year early cause of asset value declines. Their funds on foreign holdings accounts for 29 percent of their total assets. A report on the matter are posted on the company's website by its pension regulators. More on the link below.

Chilean president visits Cuba, first since 1972.

Michelle Bachelet's visit to Cuba last month was the first Presidential visit of a Chilean President to the Central American nation since 1972. This may well prove to be a sign of strengthening relationships between the two countries.

The Chilean President visited Cuba for the XVIII International Book Fair, for which Chile is this year's guest of honor.

Among the South American nations, Chile and Cuba are not the best of friends, as Chile is seen as more pro-US than pro-South America.

Endesa Chile to build hydroelectric plant

Endesa Chile, the country's leading electricity generator, announced Tuesday that it will a hydroelectric plant in the south at a cost around $24 million.

The plant, named Piruquina, is estimated to carry a total capacity of 7.6 megawatts and will be built in the southern province of Chiloe.

Endesa said that it has already submitted its environmental plans to government authorities for review.
