Dam opponents speak out against Swiss proposal

Saying that it comes up short, particularly as regards the social impact it will have, opponents of the plan by Swiss mining company Xstrata to build a large hydroelectric dam on Chile's Cuervo River voiced their opinions this week to the National Environmental Commission (CONAMA).

Chile activist group leader arrested

The long-sought leader of the Arauco-Malleco Association (CAM) Mapuche group, José Huenchunao Mariñán, has been captured by police. The indigenous rights activist, has been a fugitive from justice since August 2003, and faces a ten-year prison sentence for arson against forestry companies.

Church shocked by morning-after pill for teenagers

The Catholic church expressed strong opposition, as expected, to the decision to Chile's official decision on the morning-after pill. It reiterated that this was a violation of three fundamental rights: the right to life, the right to a private life and the right for parents to educate their children.
