Energy saving with a difference

There is a strange new spectacle to be seen in the streets of Santiago. Alongside the new Transantiago buses, another spectacle could be seen trundling through the roads of Chile’s capital city on Monday. A converted fire truck, fueled by vegetable oil and biodiesel.

Life in Chile

What's it like for a US citizen living in Chile? I’ve been living near Santiago, Chile off and on for almost three years. Usually, I spend six months in the U.S. and six months here. I wanted to get out of the U.S. as I became somewhat disenchanted with life in the US.

Not Merlot - But Carmenere

Winemakers for centuries have believed that an insect epidemic devastated vineyards and killed out the carmenere grape in the late 19th century. Until about a decade ago this was believed to be true until a wine consultant state the Merlot was too spicy and too dark and did DNA tests to confirm it was the carmenere grape. Now Chile touts carmenere as its own and is wining top honors in the wine industry.

$1,100 Raised By Paper Planes

MHR 3110 Managing Organizations and People class held a paper airplane throwing contest to raise funds for micro loan accounts in Peru and Chile. This competition drew an assortment of competitors and plane designs. Reed Merrick of The Elite Eight had the inspiration while taking a shower and they hurridly put his plan together before football practice took over the stadium.

Two Groups Visit Chile To Boost Commerce

Two Philadelphia based organizations spent four days at a conference discussing the market trends and how to boost commerce with the country. A team of 22 people attended this sponsored conference which was dubbed "United States and Chile: Strategic Partners in Business and Trade".

Chile Ranks 27th out of 65

Following the labor strike last year Chile's ranking on the world market of investing in mining plummeted from 4th last year to 27th out of 65 countries, states and provinces. Chile is the world's biggest copper producer the Fraser Institute stated today after a survey of 333 mining companies that the strike may have sparked the drop.

First Anniversay Not A Happy One

Michelle Bachelet, the first female President, is watching as her popularity continues to drop rapidly. The controversy over the rapid transit system is the main reason for her drop in approval rating. A scarcity of new buses has left large areas of the city almost without transportation and over utilizes the subway system which is a detriment.

Sergio Bitar Interviewed On Nuclear Power

President Sergio Bitar is the latest member of the Concertacion to join the debate over nuclear energy production in Chile. He recently visited the Penly nuclear plant in Normandy, France and environmental groups are accusing him of lobbying for international nuclear power companies.

2008 Legal Proceedings To Begin In Absentia

A French Judge has given the go ahead to open legal proceedings in France for 17 top Chlean leaders under the Pinochet regime. These will not begin until 2008. The men are being tried for disappearances between 1973 and 1975 in Chile and will be tried in absentia.

Seventeen Bolivians and Two Peruvians Arrested

Seventeen Bolivians and Two Peruvians were arrested for entering the country on foot and without papers and intending to work in Chile. The illegal immigrants were planning to travel to the extreme north in order to hide from police. They were handed over to the Investigative Police for deportation.
