Chile Home To Schlosberg and Treinish

Scholsberg abd Treinish have been trekking through South America for the last seven months and have made a decision based on Mother Nature and the respect they have for it. The decision was made to move northward into Chile because of the onset of the rainy season. They are enjoying every minute of their trip and especially now that they are in Chile.

Japan's First Trade Agreement in South America

Japan announced that it expects to sign a free trade deal with Chile in March. This will be Japan's first agreement with a South American country. Chile and Japan hope to bring this agreement into play around September.

Pilot Project in Santiago to Promot Condoms

The World Fund for the Fight Against AIDS will be covering the cost of Chile's Family Protection Association's distribution of condoms to the general population. This project is to begin in March and will start in Santiago.

Students Get Break

Because of the glitches in getting the new bus system off the ground this month Chilean President, Michelle Bachelet, is waiving the studen bus fares for the first three days of next week. Increased employee lateness could cause further delays in the first few weeks.

Agriculture Minister Works to Minimize Risks of Anthrax

In a small village of farmers and fishermen in the extreme south of Chile an outbreak of anthrax has happened. To date "human contagion" has been averted. The outbreak happened 10 days ago with a cow and none of the people have shown any symptoms to date.

Copper Hits Highest Gain

Copper is the nation's largest export and has posted its biggest weekly gain since May. This has helped the Chile's peso to continue to trade near the highest level against the dollar this year.

Birth of Volcano near Southern Chile

A magnitude of 5.6 volcano on the richter scale shook southern Chile that seismologists say is due to the birth of an undersea volcano. It caused some alarm because it seemed stronger and lasted longer than many of the tremors of recent weeks.

International physicists debate high energy

The European Council for Nuclear Investigation (CERN) is sponsoring a debate among physicists specializing in high energy. The debate is being coordinated by Chilean Prof. Claudio Dib, of the Federico Santa Maria Technical University Physics Department and features many notable specialists in particle physics.

Chilean Stocks take big fall

Chilean stock indexes recorded their biggest one-day fall in eight month. The retreat means Chile's all-market index has whittled its six-month gain to just over 35 percent. A lot of people had been expecting a correction and a lot of short sales have been made. Heavily weighted retail and energy companies led the decline.

Mapuche rebel leader detained

Jorge Huenchullan was detained on February 17 and sent to the Algol prison. Collipulli's Court termed Huenchullan a fugitive from justice. AT the time of his arrest he was with two other rebels who have also been charged. The Chilean Communist Party has denounced outrages taking place for months in that region.
