Chile activist group leader arrested

The long-sought leader of the Arauco-Malleco Association (CAM) Mapuche group, José Huenchunao Mariñán, has been captured by police. The indigenous rights activist, has been a fugitive from justice since August 2003, and faces a ten-year prison sentence for arson against forestry companies.

Chile's popular woman president

Women across Latin America rejoiced after the January 2006 election of Chile's Michelle Bachelet. The election of this mother of 3 gave rise to the hope that the region's macho ways were gone for good. ''Chile is no longer our fatherland -- it's our motherland'' became a popular refrain.

Subway 'groping' to be stopped in bid to stop straying hands

An unusual byproduct of the recently overhauled Transantiago subway system, has been the increase in groping incidents which have upset local women. Chilean President Michelle Bachelet said Thursday during a ceremony marking International Women’s Day that her government would not tolerate the current surge in “subway groping”.

Initiation rites face new students
