Winemakers for centuries have believed that an insect epidemic devastated vineyards and killed out the carmenere grape in the late 19th century. Until about a decade ago this was believed to be true until a wine consultant state the Merlot was too spicy and too dark and did DNA tests to confirm it was the carmenere grape.
